CERTIFICATE IV CERAMICS ELECTIVES

CUVCER201A Develop ceramic skills 50hrs
Wheel: Includes clay selection and preparation, centring and coning the clay on the wheel, basic forms such as cylinders, bowls, plates and small lidded vessels and the turning and finishing techniques of these forms. Decoration and finishing areas include, use of slips and slip   techniques, under-glaze, brushed in-glaze decoration and glaze application.
Students will be involved in group loading and firings of the kilns to biscuit and stoneware temperatures. Students maintain a technical record and visual diary for this module.

Hand building: Students will be introduced to the basic hand building techniques of pinch, coil and slab and firing these pieces using sawdust, raku and saggar fire techniques. A variety of different clays suitable for the differing firing techniques will be explored. Decorative techniques such as burnishing, texture and resist of glaze will be introduced. Students will be responsible for the firing of their own test pieces and the larger coil built raku piece created during this module.
If time permits this module continues the exploration of hand building techniques. Projects may include production and the use of simple slip moulds to produce a set of tea cups, slab techniques will be used to produce matching plates on a theme. Students use a combination of wheel and slab techniques to produce large oval dishes and platters and the firing range of mid fire or earthenware is introduced in the finishing of these pieces. Students may revisit coiling to produce a large piece with significant surface decoration and oxide washes that will be fired in a low stoneware firing with reduction for body colour. Students maintain a technical record and visual diary for this module.
(Please note the above two subjects are clustered and enrolment is required for both)
CUVCER401A Experiment with techniques to produce ceramics – 50hrs
The focus in this module is hand building and material or glaze research. This unit is not entirely self- directed and students will be introduced to the earthenware decorative technique of majolica painting to be applied to slab forms made from terracotta clays. Students maintain a detailed technical record and visual diary for this module.

Students provide own clay and hand tools (materials list found under 'enrolment' tab). Firing limits as set out by the teacher apply.

CERTIFICATE IV DIGITAL IMAGING ELECTIVES
The first two modules are designed to introduce students to digital imaging techniques, terminology, software, formats and industry knowledge. CUVDIG401A Experiment with techniques for digital images - 54 hrs
This module describes the skills and knowledge required to research and experiment with various techniques for the realisation of digital images. It outlines the way digital images are produced through the use of experimentation and ongoing refinement. This module is designed to be studio based, therefore students are mostly self-directed to explore and refine image editing and manipulation techniques to produce a final folio of digital work/art. The inspiration for this final piece can be commercial (i.e. flyers, brochure) or artistic (printed artwork).
Students are to maintain a detailed digital technical journal and digital visual diary for this module which reflects their ongoing experimentation and adoption of image editing/manipulation techniques and work practices. This digital diary/journal will clearly display the processes involved from concept to the realisation of the digital images and document all research & findings. It will accompany the final image folio product at the end of this module.
