Certificate 1V Sculpture Electives start this Monday 13 February at 9.00am

PLEASE KEEP CHECKING THE BLOG FOR FURTHER CLASS UPDATES

Some of the core subjects are a little low on enrolments and may need to be rescheduled to start in a couple of weeks.

Julie has written some information on the Monday Sculpture class for the blog spot

Have you ever thought about enrolling in sculpture?

This is a subject I think no one should miss, it opens your mind and will definitely improve your design skills. It also paves the way for more inventive painting and drawing skills. I AM VERY excited about teaching this course and thought there might be a few of you interested in a deviation from the usual painting and drawing courses.

Monday is certificate sculpture day at TAFE

Certificate Sculpture will introduce you to both contemporary and traditional techniques and skills, and encourage thoughtful and innovative designs.

First project for the year will be a mixed media low relief sculpture – presenting a broad range of materials and developing consideration of essential design and drafting skills.

Here is a selection of the Projects included in the course:

• Drawing and modelling the head from clay
• Relief sculpture – a cutting and constructing technique combining multiple media including cardboard, papers, pumice, bitumen, shellac, tissue paper and whatever else you would like to include!
• Modelling the figure with wire – three sculptures each to be covered with a different optional material such as paper, papier mache, plaster found objects
• Soft sculpture will be introduced as well as a couple of thought provoking contemporary projects:
1. Drawing without Paper and
2. making a sculpture out of Books.

If you are at all interested but uncertain I am happy to send you a PDF of the projects.
Love to see you there,
Julie

Certificate Sculpture 2012 - Mondays 9.00am - 3.00pm

Certificate Sculpture will introduce you to both contemporary and traditional sculpture techniques and skills, and encourage thoughtful and innovative ideas.

First project for the year will be a mixed media low relief sculpture – presenting a broad range of materials and developing consideration of essential design and drafting skills.

Other sculptural techniques to be explored throughout the year include the human head worked in clay and modelling the figure in pliable wire. Soft sculpture will be introduced as well as a couple of thought provoking contemporary projects: Drawing without Paper and making a sculpture out of Books.

The class is designed to introduce students to techniques, skills and innovative thinking in the construction of three dimensional artworks.

Information on the Diploma Assemblage Sculpture class from the teacher Barbara Dover
Assemblage Sculpture 2012 - Thursdays10.30am - 4.30pm

Assemblage is non-traditional sculpture made from combining found objects. Assemblage sculpture allows for an almost unlimited choice of used and new materials such as wood, fabric, plastics and natural materials.

Over the 12 weeks Assemblage Sculpture course, ways of using these non-traditional and unlikely art materials to create sculptural works will be explored. During the course, different methods for joining and re-making will be investigated.

The first 3 to 4 weeks of the course will be devoted to small projects that will allow time for confidence, knowledge and skills with materials, composition, 3-dimensional design, communication and concepts to develop.

The second 7 to 8 weeks will be allocated to 2 separate individual projects using found materials, developing concepts, resolving technical and aesthetic decisions about materials and refining assemblage artworks. The final and completed assemblage artworks will be presented in an gallery setting.

Please see the below for further information on the Ceramics and Painting programs from the teachers of those electives.

Some information about the Ceramics program from Ceramics Teacher Kerry Grierson

Places are still available in the Tuesday Certificate 1V Ceramics Class which runs from 9.00am -3.30 pm starting Tuesday 14 February.

In this class we concentrate on Wheel throwing in the morning session and hand building skills in the afternoon session. Use of glazes and decorating colours such as slips and underglaze colours, along with the firing of your work is covered in your tuition fee. Students provide their own clay and hand tools (skills in making basic tools are covered in the first class).

The Wheel throwing class is definitely for beginners (students with existing skills in wheel work can work on improving those skills and developing their forms further) and includes hands on instruction in clay choice and preparation, getting the clay on centre on the wheel and skills in lifting the clay to make the basic forms of cylinders, bowls and plates and working up to small lidded vessels.

Finishing skills such as turning and trimming the base of the pot and creating feet are also covered in the first weeks. As students skills begin to develop decorating techniques starting with those applied to the wet clay such as decorating slips (brushed slip, stencils, sgraffito, marbling, feathering), combing, altering the form (squaring) are introduced along with chattering the leather hard form when turning, incising, slip inlay.

By week 5 -6, students are collecting their 1st pieces from the biscuit firing and are learning the basics of applying resist to the base of the pot and then applying glazes. The pots will be fired to Stoneware temperatures at around 1300 degrees, giving a strong durable product that is perfect for everyday use. Students are given time to practice the basic skills and improve their work before moving on. Other areas covered include applying attachments such as lugs and handles (pulled, rolled and extruded) developing glazing techniques to include glaze on glaze and in glaze brush decoration. Students will be involved in group loading and firings of the kilns to biscuit and stoneware temperatures. Students maintain a technical record and visual diary for this module.

In the hand building session: Students will be introduced to the basic hand building techniques of pinch, coil and slab and firing these pieces using sawdust, raku and saggar fire techniques. A variety of different clays suitable for the differing firing techniques will be explored. Decorative techniques such as burnishing, texture and resist of glaze will be introduced. Students will be responsible for the firing of their own test pieces (including their own glaze tests) and the larger coil built raku piece created during this module. Raku is an exciting fast firing technique in which hot pots are pulled from the kiln with long handled tongs.

Hand building skills also include the construction and the use of simple slip moulds to produce a set of small cups, slab techniques will be used to produce matching plates on a theme. Students also use a combination of wheel and slab techniques to produce large oval dishes that can be used for serving or in the oven. Students maintain a technical record and visual diary for this module.
In the second semester students complete a research project developing techniques and a range of work based on their experience in the first semester. This can include areas such as colouring clays, printing on clays and further development in the low fire techniques such as Raku firing. Throughout the year students are encouraged to combine a mastery of techniques with a high level of creative interpretation.
Facilities include two well ventilated studios with a total of 28 pottery wheels, electric and gas fired kilns, raku kiln, pug mills, slab rollers, glaze rooms and storage areas. Students are issued with a locker to store materials and tools in.

Some information on the TNQTAFE Painting classes from the Certificate 1V teacher Jenny Valmadre
Paint for one day a week for 5 hrs (every Friday) from February to November; all paint and mixed media material supplied.

Learn how to mix a huge colour palette with a minimum of colours (all supplied). Skills start with the basic application of acrylic paint (wet in wet, dry brush, scumbling and glazing techniques). We look at how to build mood with a limited palette, pastellating, colour bias and transparent paint all become very manageable.

The course rapidly moves into more contemporary mixed media processes: blending printmaking with painting; orbital sanding of surfaces to give grottage and frottage result and image transfer techniques. This section of the course helps to establish you as an original artists, paint never comes straight from the tube: your colour theory and your mixed media aims to give you an original but intelligent contemporary product.
I also look at basic rules of adult portraiture (via charcoal and gesso under-painting, we use glaze work, stencils etc to produce works that link to the personalities of the student.) We learn to see: how light wraps and reflects and how we paint that.

After the first year of skill building in painting, you can continue into diploma or second year painting ( one day a week as a part-time student) and continue to further your skills through concept development, learn to build a series and sequence of work that is the crux of professional practice. 2nd year really gives you the chance to push your capabilities beyond what you perceive as painting.

Julie Poulsen leads you into new grounds, challenges your perception and pushes you toward mature, original, authentic art.
