Verge 2014 opens this Saturday afternoon at 2pm at the Cairns Regional Gallery

 

 

 

 

EXHIBITION OPENING EVENT VERGE 2014

Saturday 22 November 2014, 2.00 pm

With Rose Rigley, artist
Verge 2014 is a group exhibition of selected works by students of James Cook University Creative Industries, TAFE Visual Arts and TAFE Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual Arts courses.
This exhibition celebrates the vitality, creative energies and diversity of practice of artists who are on the verge of launching their professional careers.

Artists represented in Verge 2014 are Phillip Johns, Marnie Awarm, Jessica Pledger, Maree Grey, Samantha Laifoo, Laura Billy, Maiga Pearson, George Musu, Brenda Howarth, Rhonda Sciacca, Jamaika Yaganegi, Bronte Scott, Marika Mago and Sharon Weller.

Jewellery Short course with Kate Hunter starting this evening at 6pm


A message from Kate regarding standard of dress and footwear for class

Hi Everyone
Welcome to the Jewellery and Silversmithing class this evening.

We will be in room Y 104 at the top of the ramp into Y block. The best place to park is in the car park next to the Hospitality building on Gatton Street. You can then walk towards Y block (on left from car park) and the Horticulture shed ( to the right). A map of the campus can be found the enrolment info tab on left hand side of page.

I would like you to bring a note book and pen or pencil for your own notes and references.

Please wear covered shoes and not to flowing clothes.

I would also like hair to be tied back to prevent any mishap.

I look forward to meeting you all and sharing my passion for Silversmithing.

See you all tonight, and please feel free to ask any questions.

Jewellery and Silversmith Introductory course with Kate Hunter starts Thursday 9th of October


The next class in Jewellery and Silversmithing starts on Thursday 9th October.

The class runs for 4 Thursday evenings until Thursday 30th of October, 6.00pm – 8.30pm.  Y Block room Y104. Cost $170.01 - phone 1300 656 959 to enrol

This introductory course will teach you fundamental jewellery making techniques using the jeweller’s saw, the art of heat control and soldering, jewellery component, chain and ring making, along with the principles of forging and doming.
You will be able to create a piece of finished wearable jewellery, or small set within the 4 weeks. Bring design ideas for discussion and note/sketch book.  
No experience necessary, equipment supplied, wear covered shoes, tied back hair and apron.  There will be additional costs for materials - silver purchased directly from the teacher on the night at $3 per gram (6 - 12 grams depending on the size of the project so approx. $20 - $40 in silver) To contact Kate for further information email her at info@katehunterdesigns.com

Certificate III Students have finished the week with Sculpture class

The CUV30111 Certificate III in Visual Arts students have finished the week with the Produce Sculpture unit. Today's class focused on introductory mouldmaking skills with students working on a small ceramic jewellery piece (pendant) or a small relief tile in a smooth white clay. The mould will be made using Plaster of Paris and the pieces will be reproduced using stoneware and porcelain clays. They will be finished using a range of ceramic decorative and glazing techniques.

Introduction to Pottery with Rachel Platte starts tonight @ 6pm

The first of our Introduction to Pottery short courses starts this evening at 6pm. The class will be held in L101 which is opposite the big red wall off the Gatton Street entrance to the TNQTAFE campus.
Please ensure that you wear covered shoes and bring an old towel. Studio practice clay (AKA Bin 2014 or mongrel mix) is supplied for this class. If you would like to purchase some lovely new clay at cost price please bring cash - approximately $10.

Diploma Ceramics starts on Monday 3rd February - please check on the start date of all other Diploma classes.


Diploma Ceramics starts this coming Monday at 9.00am, All other Diploma classes have been postponed until further notice. We will advise on the status of theTuesday Diploma Painting class on Monday afternoon.

Certificate III will start on Monday 10th of February.
Induction/orientation for Certificate III is on Wednesday, February 5th at 10am in the Y block gallery.

Introduction to Pottery: with Rachel Platte


12 February - 5 March

(4 Classes @ 2.5 hours each)

Wednesday evenings, 6.00pm - 8.30pm

Cost $155.00

This class will introduce students to the wide range of techniques associated with the ceramics field. Complete pieces using the techniques of hand building (press moulding and coiling) and be introduced to wheel work and the techniques of decorating and glazing. Students will complete a number of pieces in class that will be decorated using a variety of techniques. These pieces will be glazed and fired.

Short courses starting next week - Portrait: with Kristin Tennyson starts next Monday evening at 6.00 pm

Portrait with Kristin Tennyson is a four week class where students work from famous works and a live model. Students will learn various painting techniques to represent portraiture. The class tackles portraiture from a number of different angles, working from live observation of the model in class and from source imagery. 
Monday evenings. 3 February - 24 February, 6.00pm - 8.30pm
